The materials I use in my art are a mix of purchased, recycled, and home-grown. I purchase canvases, paints, painting and carving tools, and stones. I recycle glass bottles, breaking them up and tumbling them with sand to create my "sea glass". I also recycle old jewelry by using the stones and "pearls". I grow the gourds, they are bird house gourds grown in my garden, picked and bleached and hung up to dry in my barn. I usually age them for 2 years to make sure they are dry.
With the gourds, I do two things. The pretty ones I keep whole and make my leaf and antler gourds, shown in a gallery towards the bottom of my site. On some of them, I use an additional ring of gourd to form the base, that is glued on. The not-so-pretty ones get carved or cut up or create shapes, like the leaves and turtles I use on the canvases. They are burn-etched with pattern, then painted. The glass and stones are used on the canvases to add a little life to the acrylic pours. All my canvas creations are covered in epoxy resin. The whole gourd creations are sprayed with satin finish polyurethane.
I make my art when I have time and feel creative. I started doing the antler and leaf gourds several years ago, put some in my house, gave some to family, then boxed up the rest. Now time to sell them. The acrylic pours I have been doing for a couple of years, filling my home with them. But now it is time to sell my extra pieces. I am also beginning to do more of the gourd leaves on canvas, two creations I currently have in my home are pictured on the scroll below.
I purchase stones, but I make my own "seaglass" from broken bottles tumbled in a rock tumbler.
